With the spring racing highlight, the QIPCO Guineas Festival, set to take place on 5th and 6th May, Newmarket Racecourses is encouraging families and younger generations to go racing this year by hosting a specially built activity area for under 18s.
The area, known as ‘The Fan Zone’, is the result of a five-year partnership between QIPCO British Champions Series and The Pony Club. It aims to give children the opportunity to discover and learn about the sport of horseracing through various activities on course. Attendees will get the chance to attend a bitesize lesson at ‘The Fan Zone’ Jockey School, meet a former racehorse, learn about the tack and kit used for racing and complete a tour of the racecourse.
There will also be the opportunity to learn about career prospects within racing, such as Pony Racing and further education at the British Racing School or Northern Racing College. A wide range of organisations are involved in the area, including Careers In Racing, Racing To School and the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art at Palace House, Newmarket.
‘The Fan Zone’ area is open to anyone under the age of 18 and will be open over both days of the QIPCO Guineas Festival. Situated on the Boulevard Lawn, near the Grandstand & Paddock entrance, ‘The Fan Zone’ will be close to other exciting, family-friendly activities, as well as live music and is of course, not far from the track.
Young riders who already belong to The Pony Club are encouraged to attend on the Sunday, when they will also be able to earn their Intro to Pony Racing badge, although they are still welcome attend on the Saturday. Non-members are invited to attend either of the two days.
As in previous years, the partnership’s activity will then return to QIPCO British Champions Day on Saturday 20th October at Ascot Racecourse. The ‘Fan Zone in association with the Pony Club’ will stage a wide range of fun and educational activities alongside the best horseracing action that Britain has to offer.
Oisin Murphy, British Champions Series ambassador, commented:
“This initiative is a fantastic way for new, younger audiences to get to know and understand racing in a fun, enjoyable and educational way.
“It is great to see how Newmarket Racecourses and the QIPCO British Champions Series are looking to motivate younger racegoers to better understand the sport but also understand the wide ranging careers that go into making this industry thrive. Children under 18 go free to the QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket, so it’s the perfect excuse for families to come along.”
